U-Pick Strawberries

Earlier this week, on a rare sunny and warm day in the Seattle area, Kayley and I went strawberry picking with my mom and two nieces. We headed out to Remlinger Farms in the morning and timed it perfectly to enjoy the sunny morning weather, but miss the crowds. It had rained the day before, but thankfully it wasn’t too muddy, except for where all the cars needed to park.

My mom's car got a little muddy, and she had washed it a few days before too
Kayley went right to the berry picking. I don’t think it took her long at all to figure out what we were up to and how to help. We were showing her the strawberries (which she loves to eat) and she caught on right away that we were searching for them, picking them, and putting them into box. Her style of picking was to pull a red strawberry off the vine (or get some help) and then take a bit before putting it in the box or hand it to one of us to do so. It took a while for her to understand that if she wanted to eat a strawberry that was fine, but she had to eat the whole thing and not put it in the box, and that uneaten strawberries belonged in the box.

Yummy strawberry!

Kayley really enjoyed going up and down the strawberry rows we were assigned, and helping her Maimie and two cousins find more strawberries or lessen their load by snacking on a few. I think she must have eaten at least 10-20 strawberries. We all enjoyed the sunny weather and sweet tasting strawberries and came out with muddy shoes and a crate of our own strawberries.

Nom nom nom
I do have to admit it was a little difficult for me to continuously get down to pick the strawberries, so I left most of the picking up to everyone else and helped point out where some yummy looking bunches were. It was totally worth it though! Most my strawberries have been turned into strawberry lemonade (my favorite summer drink) and sorbet. Many have gone to be part of our meals. Part of me wishes I had more.

After we spent time in the field, we headed to the Remlinger store and restaurant for lunch. What a delicious lunch! And what a fun store! We all had fun looking around at their farm goods and homemade items the most. And boy were the hats fun to put on. They had a couple HUGE bear stuffed animals that Kayley was very fascinated by too.

Over all we had a great morning berry picking and I hope to do it again next year with both our girls. And maybe in a couple weeks we’ll go again for their raspberry season!
