First Flight

Back inJanuary I said goodbye to the house I grew up in, thinking I would never see it again. Well, turns out I was able to see it one more time. Andrew, Kayley and I headed south to help my mom pack up the rest of her house, clean and get everything into a moving truck and her van last Thursday. Actually all my siblings were able to do the same thing. It was like a mini family reunion. But in order to get to my mom’s house to help her out, Kayley got to experience her first airplane ride. 

Going to the airport

We were a little nervous about check-in and all the rules about flying with an infant on-lap, so we decided to do check-in in person so we could talk to a human instead of just push buttons on a screen. After doing that I felt a lot better, even though we had to wait in line for a while to go through security. Kayley didn’t seem to mind though; she was enjoying watching all the people and saying “hi” and waving to those who showed interest in her. Juggling all our bags and Kayley to go through security was a little difficult, but thankfully the TSA workers were really nice, and I think everyone around us knew we had our hands full and were doing the best we could to get through the security point safely, efficiently and quickly.

Before boarding, we all ate lunch, and then we had Kayley walk around the airport as much as possibly to get as much energy out of her as we could. This made it so we had the best take off we could have imagined: she was asleep in my arms and ended up sleeping for half the flight. The last half of the flight she played with her Daisy doll and said “hi” to those around us.

When we started to descend we gave her her sippy cup and some crackers to make sure she was swallowing often to help her ears with the pressure change. It worked! No tears or signs of discomfort. As for the turbulence we dealt with, she thought it was fun and was smiling and laughing at the big bumps. When we landed, she did great! Andrew was holding onto Kayley as she munched away at her cracker, and then it suddenly got really loud (SJ was having a lot of wind, and we were seated right behind the wings). She looked at me wide-eyed and a little scared, so I just smiled, clapped and in a very cheerful voice said “yay! We’re landing!” Taking the cue from me that everything was okay, Kayley smiled back and even clapped. What a great little passenger she was!

And to make our arrival to Cali even better, Andrew folks were able to surprise us inside the terminal at baggage claim. Kayley was happy to see her Grandpa and Grandma again and showed them her best smile. We were hoping to go to a park with them, but since the weather wasn’t the greatest we went to my mom’s to hang out and have dinner. Little Miss Kayley was able to be surrounded and loved by all three of her grandparents in one day!
